On 7th February, Senator Gallagher called upon the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to provide funding to continue work on the Monaghan to Emyvale N2 Road as soon as possible.
The current position in relation to Phase 3 of the Emyvale to Monaghan Scheme is that €600,000 was allocated in 2016 for land acquisition and preparation of tender documents. It is anticipated that funding will be allocated in 2017 to complete land acquisition. However right now there is no commitment from the TII to progress to construction stage which is estimated to cost €6.4million.
“The people of Monaghan and those who use the N2 on a regular basis NEED to see road improvement works as soon as possible. Road safety is in the best interests of everyone and this is a particularly dangerous stretch of road.”
“Unfortunately, the poor conditions of this road were shown on the 7th February following a 3 car crash which led to one fatality. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sympathy to the families involved” said Senator Gallagher
“There’s an urgency to fix this stretch of roadway, the figures for fatality are well above the national norm. We rightly preach about road safety and the precautions we all need to take while driving and even before taking a vehicle out on the road but there is an onus on the Government to ensure that the roads we use are as safe as they can be. Roads that are of high strategic importance, that are heavily used by both local and national traffic must be on the top of the list when it comes to actions that will make them safer for all.”
