This afternoon in the Seanad I spoke on Statements on Transport and Tourism with Minister Shane Ross.
I addressed the need to promote rural areas such as Monaghan and Cavan as tourist destinations seeing as it has easy access from Dublin with many facilities to offer.
It is no secret that border counties have already felt the impacts of Brexit and the Tourism industry is no different. Senator Gallagher also believes the Irish tourist boards should also be promoting rural areas, like Monaghan and Cavan as there is so much to offer, without being too far from the popular tourist hubs like Dublin. Monaghan and Cavan are two very accessible counties from Dublin with high class facilities. We are currently hosting the Irish rugby team for a training session ahead of their game against France on the 25th and it’s great to see them taking advantage of our local facilities. With St. Patrick’s Day festivities rapidly approaching, it would be great to see places like Monaghan and Cavan be promoted for tourism opportunities.
I have also called on the Minister to address the long waiting lists for driving tests for young drivers and he has advised that he is in the process of hiring 10 additional test instructors which he hopes will alleviate the problem. This will hopefully speed up the process of our young drivers being given the opportunity to finally get on the roads.
